It may not come as a big surprise that Craigslist is a popular place for hookers and pimps to advertise. Police have used Craigslist to round up prostitutes several times, including during this well-publicized event in the state of Washington. In some casesthe pimps who post these have been sent to the Big House for years.
Police have even been known to pose as postitutes on the site. Prosecutors and police have complained that Craigslist has become a clearinghouse for prostitution.
The site now says it will do more to police itself. The Wall Street Journal reports :.
In an agreement with attorneys general from 40 states, Craigslist said it will require posters of erotic-services to give a working phone and pay a fee with a valid credit card. Craigslist also said it has sued 14 software and Internet companies that help ad posters circumvent its safeguards against inappropriate content and illegal activity, Blumenthal told the WSJ. The company will provide states with information about those businesses for possible civil and criminal prosecution. San Francisco U. Attorney Joseph Russoniello said his office regularly sees Craigslist in cases it brings against human-trafficking rings that engage women in prostitution.
